Academic responsibilities

Anne Chick is Director of the Sustainable Design Research Centre. Until recently she was Director of the Sustainability in Practice Network within WestFocus (a consortium of seven universities (www.westfocus.org.uk). This role involved liaising with academics interested and researching into sustainable development topics and knowledge transfer activities across four of the seven universities. She set up, promoted and grew the network, liaised with the Westfocus Board of Directors, network members, other networks and other external stakeholders, as well as activities of the network. This included event management, website development, line manager to five seconded staff and a £700K budget.

Chick is Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary, Canada. She is an Associate Editor on the Design Journal and a Design Studies journal referee. Her sustainable design research, knowledge transfer and educational work have been acknowledged in a number of reports and publications.<!--[if !supportFootnotes]-->[1]<!--[endif]-->

She has been an academic pioneer in the sustainable design area for over fifteen years. Chick was the co-founder of the Centre for Sustainable Design and author of the Graphic Designer’s Greenbook: A Handbook and Source Guide on Design and the Environment. Reviewed by Treehugger as: ‘the book that got the ball rolling back in 1992. An excellent book, full of useful insights and information but sadly now out of print’. <!--[if !supportFootnotes]-->[2]<!--[endif]--> Her work focused predominantly on sustainable design pedagogy and eco-design practices in the graphic and packaging design fields. Her publications include Paper, Paper! (Waste Watch Publications, 1991) and UK Eco-design Survey: A Study of the Chartered Society of Design Membership (CSD, 1997).

While at the Surrey Institute of Art & Design (1995-2001) Chick set up and managed an interdisciplinary cross curricula sustainable development set of seven undergraduate modules aimed at the creative arts, art & design history and journalism. This programme was extremely successful and over 500 students studies these modules each semester. Her work was acknowledged by HEFCE in its HEIs and Sustainable Development research and publications.

Her recent research has focused on two main topics: (1) developing environmentally-considered packaging (2) creating markets for UK recycled materials by harnessing design and branding.

She has recently directed a number of funded research programmes and published in refereed journals, at international conferences and in books. During the past five years she has raised funds for research and knowledge transfer projects worth over £1M.

Recent publications include ‘Closing the loop': the role of design in the success of six small UK recycled product manufacturers’ (Co-Author:Dr Paul Micklethwaite / Eds: Dr Tracy Bhamra & Professor Bernard Hon) in Design & Manufacture for Sustainable Development (2004, Professional Engineering Publishing) and various chapters including ‘Beyond-the-Box Packaging Solutions’ and
